Summer in Western Canada means lakes, rivers, and long weekends on the water. Getting your boat there and back safely is what makes those trips possible, and the right trailer makes it easy. The wrong one creates headaches at the boat launch, wears on your hull, and can turn a straightforward haul into a stressful experience.
Whether you are launching a fishing boat on a quiet Alberta lake, trailering a ski boat to a BC reservoir, or hauling a pontoon to the Saskatchewan river system, the trailer underneath your boat matters more than most people realize until something goes wrong. At Factory Outlet Trailers, we help customers across Western Canada find boat trailers matched to their specific hull, their tow vehicle, and how they like to spend their summers. Browse our boat trailer inventory or contact our team to get ready for the season ahead.
A boat trailer does more than move your boat from the driveway to the water. It supports the hull during transit, controls how the boat sits during loading and unloading, and determines how easy or difficult every launch and retrieval is going to be.
A trailer that is too small can stress the wrong points of the hull. A poorly maintained trailer can fail at the ramp or on the highway. A mismatched setup can turn every launch into a frustrating process. These are common issues when boats and trailers are not properly matched.
Getting this right from the start protects your boat, simplifies every trip, and ensures reliable performance over time.
The most important design difference is how the boat is supported.
Roller trailers:
These are often suited for fibreglass V-hull boats with a defined keel.
Bunk trailers:
These are commonly used for aluminum boats, pontoons, and flatter hull designs.
Choosing between the two depends on your hull type and the ramps you typically use.
Choosing the right size is essential for safety and performance.
You need to consider:
A boat’s actual towing weight is often higher than its listed dry weight. Selecting a trailer with extra capacity improves stability and reduces long-term wear.
Boat trailers are regularly exposed to water, so material choice matters.
Painted steel:
Galvanized steel:
Aluminum:
A properly set up trailer makes launching and loading much easier.
Key factors include:
Small adjustments can make a significant difference in ease of use.
Regular maintenance is essential for performance and safety.
We recommend:
Wheel bearing maintenance is especially important, as water exposure is a common cause of failure.
Boat trailers operate in demanding environments.
We regularly see:
Every recommendation should be based on how trailers perform in these real conditions.

Start with your boat's loaded weight, which includes the hull, motor, fuel, and all onboard gear, not just the dry hull weight listed in the manufacturer's specs. Your trailer's GVWR needs to comfortably exceed this number. From there, match the trailer length to your boat's length, confirming that the bow stop and stern support sit in the right positions for your hull. Beam width also matters, particularly for wider hulls and pontoon boats, where the trailer's width needs to match the boat's support requirements. If you are unsure of your boat's loaded weight, the dealer or manufacturer who sold you the boat should be able to provide a realistic figure. Our team is also happy to work through the sizing with you based on your specific boat.
Surge brakes are the most common brake system on boat trailers because they are self-contained and do not require a brake controller in the tow vehicle. They work hydraulically: when the tow vehicle slows, the trailer pushes forward against a hydraulic actuator at the coupler, which applies the trailer brakes proportionally. Surge brakes work well for most recreational boat trailer applications. Electric brakes require a brake controller in the tow vehicle and provide more precise braking response, which is an advantage on heavier trailers or steep boat ramps. In most Canadian provinces, trailer brakes are required above a certain loaded weight threshold. If your boat and trailer combination exceeds that threshold, brakes are not optional regardless of which system you choose.
For a trailer that goes into the water regularly, wheel bearing inspection and maintenance should happen at least once per season, and more frequently if you are launching multiple times per week throughout the summer. When a hot bearing is submerged in cold water at the ramp, the rapid temperature change can draw water past the seal and into the bearing housing. Over time, this leads to bearing corrosion and failure. Buddy bearings or bearing protectors with a grease fitting allow you to pump fresh grease into the housing regularly, which helps displace any water that has entered and keeps the bearings lubricated. A seized wheel bearing on a loaded boat trailer at highway speed is a dangerous situation that routine maintenance prevents entirely.
